Some districts are chosen for their services, others for their connections. Brera is chosen for how it feels to walk through it. Narrow cobbled streets, workshops, galleries, the Accademia palazzo with the Pinacoteca, the Biblioteca Braidense, the astronomical Observatory, the Botanical Garden founded by Maria Theresa of Austria in 1774. A few blocks that hold an essential part of Milan's cultural history.
The Grande Brera
Since December 2024 Palazzo Citterio, in via Brera, has housed the Pinacoteca's twentieth-century collections. It is the last piece of the Grande Brera project, awaited for decades. For the district it has meant a new reason to visit and greater attention to the care of public spaces.
The homes
Brera's housing stock is almost entirely historic: noble palazzi, eighteenth- and nineteenth-century houses, a few twentieth-century interventions. The most sought-after homes share recurring features:
- High floors overlooking the rooftops, or a tree-lined courtyard.
- Generous ceiling heights and, on the piano nobile, decorated ceilings.
- Silence, rare in such a lively district: rooms facing the courtyard are worth more.
- Outdoor space, almost an exception in this part of the city.
In Brera the most beautiful home often does not face the street. It faces a courtyard nobody sees.
What to know before buying
Historic buildings require care: systems to be checked, lifts sometimes missing or small, heritage restrictions on façades and common parts. The life of the district should also be considered: the liveliest streets, such as Fiori Chiari or Madonnina, have undeniable charm but also long evenings, especially in spring and during Design Week.
The quieter streets, towards via Solferino, via dei Giardini, via Borgonuovo and the Porta Venezia gardens, offer a different balance: the same atmosphere, with less noise.
A narrow market
Little is sold in Brera, and when it is, it is often done discreetly, without public listings. Those looking here need patience and someone who knows the homes before they go on sale. It is one of the few districts in Milan where a network of relationships counts as much as the budget.
Brera cannot be repeated. And it is precisely its uniqueness, more than any market trend, that protects its value over time.
